What Exactly Is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol. It is one of the 85 chemical compounds found in the hemp species of the cannabis plant. It is extracted and usually made into a tincture or oil, ointments, and edibles.

CBD oil is generally used to alleviate a wide range of ailments including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and epilepsy. Research has also shown that it is a favorable preventative treatment as well as an effective cancer treatment

Not to be confused with its psychoactive counterpart, THC, CBD oil will not get you or your furry friends high. Although THC products have also become known as an effective treatment for a multitude of ailments, they're not yet legal in all 50 states.

CBD oil is legal in all 50 states, as long is it contains less than 0.3% THC. While there is still a lot of stigma and confusion surrounding CBD oil, it should be noted that it is a safe, legal, and an effective alternative to prescription pain killers.

CBD oil is often confused with Hemp oil as well. While CBD is cultivated from the Hemp species of the cannabis plant, it is indeed different. Hemp oil (also referred to as Hemp seed oil) is extracted by pressing the seeds of the plant. Hemp seeds do not contain any THC and very little CBD.

It's generally used as a superfood and in beauty products because of its range of vitamins, minerals, and Omega fatty acids.

How Does CBD Oil Work?

Just like humans, animals have an endocannabinoid system that regulates major physiological functions throughout the body. Things like immunity, sleep, pain, and mood all fall under the responsibility of the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body. The brain and central nervous system contain what are called CB1 receptors, while the peripheral organs and immune cells contain CB2 receptors.

When a system in the body is in need, the endocannabinoid system responds to those needs by producing and sending out endocannabinoids to bind to the receptors. For example, when your body needs fuel it will cause your stomach to growl or rumble. This lets you know that you are hungry and need to eat.

CBD is a phytocannabinoid that is capable of fulfilling the same duties of the endocannabinoids when they are lacking within the system. It will bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the same way in cats as they do in humans.

Why CBD Oil for Cats?

CBD oil is well known for its anti-inflammatory effects on the body and analgesic properties. It is widely used to treat arthritis, pancreatitis, neuropathy pain, nerve-related pain, intestinal inflammation, asthma, and inflammation.

Cats can suffer from many of the same ailments as humans do. And, just like humans, these conditions can be hereditary or caused by a poor diet and lack of exercise. While research with CBD for cats is still in its early stages, many cat owners have reported positive changes in their feline friends after giving them CBD for pets.

It Can Reduce Pain and Swelling

Any pain or swelling that humans and animals feel is regulated by the vanilloid receptor in the brain. CBD oil will target that receptor and inhibit it from turning on. When this receptor has been deemed "inactive" by the body, it stops sending out the pain and swelling signals. As a result, pain and swelling will gradually fade.

It Can Help with Your Cat's Anxiety and Depression

We often think of anxiety and depression being conditions exclusive to humans. These conditions are both caused by a hormonal imbalance, and they can lead to aggressive behavior in your cat. CBD oil will help to regulate the unbalanced hormones improving your cat's overall mood.

Aggressive or fearful behavior exhibited by cats is generally rooted in anxiety and depression. They may become reclusive when you have guests, or fearful during car rides. They may exhibit separation anxiety or become visibly afraid when they hear loud noises like fireworks and thunder.

CBD oil will help to relieve your cat's symptoms so they can relax. CBD also stimulates your cat's adenosine and serotonin receptors, which will improve their overall level of happiness.

It Can Suppress Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common and serious neurological disorder in both humans and animals. It is characterized by recurring and unpredictable seizures. Seizures are caused by electrical disruptions in the brain that result in uncontrollable shaking, the loss of awareness, periods of unusual behavior, as well as other health problems.

CBD oil has become an impressive and effective treatment for epilepsy and seizures. It has the ability to counteract seizures by reducing the number of electrical disruptions in the brain. It doesn't cure epilepsy, but it greatly suppresses both present and future seizures each time it is ingested.

CBD oil for cats (and humans) is a much safer alternative than anti-seizure medications. This is due to the fact that anti-seizure medications are notorious for their adverse side effects like mood swings, kidney failure, and heart failure.

Another troubling truth is that anti-seizure medication may not work on your cat, even if you are following the directions correctly. This is because each cat is different health and tolerance-wise, and the medication doesn't provide a one size fits all solution.

CBD oil offers a safer, non-toxic alternative that has been proven to succeed in humans and animals where traditional anti-seizure medication fails.

It Can Prevent and Ease the Effects of Cancer

Years of research on the pathophysiological process of CBD in live animals and humans have come to show just how this new supplement has an advantage over cancer cells. CBD can actually inhibit the binding of certain protein receptors while activating specific neurotransmitters responsible for signaling and interrupting pathways in the body.

In other words, by blocking the signals of these receptors, CBD stops cancer cells from growing. In addition, it has been found that CBD can activate PPA receptors within the nucleus of a cancer cell. This is what causes cancer cells to die.

CBD has also been shown to slow down or stop the migration of cancer cells, as well as tumors. In cases of curing cancer, CBD was used in conjunction with regular cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Due to its therapeutic properties, CBD has also gained popularity in easing the painful side effects of different cancers as well as cancer treatments.

Of course, CBD is not a cure and more research needs to be done.

It Can Treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is considered more of a syndrome than an actual disease. It is caused by chronic irritation to the stomach or intestines. Inflammation is the body's response to the irritation which could stem from an injury or a foreign substance.

The body has different inflammatory cells responsible for immune system response to parasites, diseases, and allergies. Some of these cells destroy bacteria and clean up damaged tissue. Over time, with chronic inflammation, normal tissue can be replaced by fibrous scar tissue.

IBD is usually seen in cats between five and twelve years of age. Common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. If the IBD persists, your cat will develop a loss of appetite and weight loss will occur.

CBD oil for cats has become a wonderful relief for the effects of IBD as it reduces inflammation throughout the body. It's also a much safer alternative to steroids.

It Can Reduce Nausea and Improve Appetite

If your cat ends up with cancer or another difficult condition, they may still need regular treatment like chemotherapy. The side effects of cancer treatment are well known. Nausea, loss of appetite, and reduced energy are common.

CBD for pets will help to ease those side effects, so your cat won't have to suffer.

It Can Improve Coat and Skin Condition

In humans, CBD is known to improve skin conditions like acne and dry skin. And just like humans, cats can suffer from certain skin conditions and allergic reactions.

If your cat is displaying signs of excessive and frantic scratching or grooming, they may have some sort of skin allergy. You will notice very dry or very oily, inflamed skin. Other signs to look out for are bald patches, matted fur, or your cat will shake their head constantly.

From airborne pollen to mites, there are a handful of possible allergens your cat could have. It can be a long and difficult process to determine what your cat is allergic to.

In a 2005 Finnish study, researchers found that CBD oil for cats greatly reduced the itchiness, inflammation, and dryness in their skin. It was also found to promote the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

CBD oil can also be applied topically for relief and to revive your cat's coat.

Are There Any Side Effects?

The short answer among veterinarians is no. Hemp for cats does not have any risky side effects. However, no two cats are the same and may handle CBD oil differently.

Slight sedation is the most common side effect in cats that are given CBD oil. Less common side effects are a change in appetite, anxiety, or vomiting. However, these particular side effects are very rare.

It's important to keep an eye on your cat while it's adjusting to a new CBD oil regimen. It's also extremely important that you never give your cat anything other than hemp CBD. THC is toxic to cats and dogs.

Make sure that you purchase only CBD for pets specifically from a reputable company. They should be able to provide you with a certificate of analysis that will list everything in the product. It should also be 100% natural, GMO-free, soy free, and lab tested.

How to Dose CBD for Cats

Your kitty will require a much smaller amount of CBD oil than you.

Make sure you purchase a CBD oil specifically made for pets, and always go by your veterinarian's recommendation. They will usually suggest that you start with 0.1-0.5mg of CBD oil per kg of your cat. Of course, doses will vary depending on your cat's weight and condition.

It's always good to start small and continue to monitor your cat over the first few weeks. Change won't happen overnight, so it is suggested that you wait about two weeks before upping your cat's dosage.

The recommended CBD dosages for chronic conditions in cats are as follows:

  • Arthritis: 0.5mg per kg, twice daily
  • Pancreatitis: 0.1-0.5mg per kg, twice daily (gradual increase)
  • Seizures: 0.5-3mg per kg, twice daily (gradual increase)
  • IBD: 0.2mg per kg, twice daily
  • Asthma: 0.5mg per kg, twice daily
  • Chronic Upper Respiratory Infections: 5mg per kg, twice daily

Of course, you'll want to verify these doses with your veterinarian and discuss your cat's condition before using this example chart.

How to Give Your Cat CBD

Cats are finicky. It can be very difficult to get your cat to take CBD oil straight from the dropper.

If using a dropper or a syringe, make sure to reward your cat with a treat afterward. That way, they will become less resistant to taking their CBD over time. In the early stages, you may have to cover your cat with a towel or hold your cat down from behind with your thighs to keep them stable.

An easier method may be to put the drops on the top of your cat's paw. Cat's are meticulously clean, and so they will lick the oil right of their paw to keep clean.

If your cat doesn't let you near their paws, the easiest way is to mix the CBD with their treats or food. You'll just have to make sure that your cat eats the entire dose.
