From celebrities to the regular Joe, more and more people are using vaporizer pens for their cannabis oil.

People are using vaporizer pens in public from the airports and restaurants to movie theaters and concerts. More states like Colorado and Massachusetts have legalized marijuana in recent years, which means vaporizer pens will likely only grow in popularity.

So how can you choose the right vaporizer pen for your needs? What do you need in terms of the THC oil cartridge?

Below we outline what you should look for when choosing a THC oil cartridge. Keep reading to learn more!

Choosing preferred cutting agents in vape oils

Ingredients other than cannabis compounds make up the majority of vaporizer oils. The THC oil cartridge and vape oils are usually mixed with one or more cutting agents to dilute the solution.

The most common cutting agents are polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), and coconut oil or MCT oil.

The details behind cutting agents in your THC oil cartridge

One of the first cutting agents used alongside vape oils is the polyethylene glycol cutting agent.

This cutting agent makes mixing the solution much easier and offers a mellow and pleasurable vapor cloud. However, use of polyethylene glycol as a cutting agent has decreased in the market today.

Propylene glycol is a thinner version of PEG and doesn’t mix with oils as well as PEG. So if your THC oil cartridge does have propylene glycol, remember that it may not mix as well.

Propylene glycol creates smooth, clean draws but it won’t lead to big vapor clouds.

Vegetable glycerin is a popular cutting agent used in the typical THC oil cartridge. You may not see this cutting agent mixed with other ingredients because it doesn’t mix well in oil. It works well in vaporization pens.

Coconut oil and MCT oil are some of the newer cutting agents on the market. These agents are great at mixing with oils but may have an unpleasant aftertaste.

Safety and health concerns of cutting agents

The majority of cutting agents are safe in products used on your skin or ingested. However, more researchers are looking at how it impacts inhalation and how it reacts with heat.

PEGs, for instance, may be contaminated with ethylene oxide, which is a carcinogen.

A lot of food and hygiene products use Propylene glycol. When it comes to your health, be aware that the US Food and Drug Administration has reported that, if propylene glycol is ingested in large doses, it could cause kidney damage.

Propylene glycol may also lead to adverse reactions such as a sore throat or muscle pain.

Vegetable glycerin has also had some safety and health concerns. Badly processed vegetable glycerin has been linked with a greater risk of pulmonary problems when inhaled.

You may want to avoid cutting agents as a whole to keep yourself healthier. Some of the best products are completely pure.

Instead, choose terpenes as opposed to other natural and artificial flavorings. This will add more flavor to your vaporization pen.

Avoid products with hydrocarbons

Another tip to consider when choosing a vaporizer pen is to avoid products that have hydrocarbons. Pick products tested in the lab for residual solvents.

Distilled oils go through a distillation process where cannabinoids and flavonoids are removed from a plant. This is usually done with traditional methodology using carbon dioxide.

Fractional distillation may be the best option since it creates a potent product that is at least 85 percent total cannabinoids, according to Summit Research. This will bring more consistent medicine. If you want medical marijuana at its best quality, get products created through fractional distillation and lacking hydrocarbons.

Check out the material of the THC oil cartridge

You need to be aware of the materials that make up your vaporizer pen. You don't want to get plastic or low-grade wire. These could be dangerous and very unhealthy to vape with.

You want to get a vape pen made out of good quality material that won't break.

"I look for the flavor—a coil that transmits the flavor of our oil the best. That's number one," said Adam Lustig, CEO of Higher Vision Cannabis.

"Number two is ease of use, convenience, whether it leaks or not. Leaks happen. Under certain circumstances, in a hot car, at a certain angle, anything will leak. Then, there are some that are cheaply made, or break too easily."

Consider getting a pre-filled vaporizer

There is a lot of ease and convenience with getting yourself a pre-filled vaporizer pen. There will be some additives in these vape pens.

Be sure to check the ingredient details of the cannabis available on the outside packaging.

"The convenience is really liberating. You can just hit it without loading it or touching it, but it doesn't come without compromise," Volodarsky said. "If you're buying a pre-filled vaporizer, make sure the information on the cannabis inside it is listed on the outside packaging."

Be aware of the unregulated cannabis market

It may not always be clear what type of vape pen you are getting when you purchase in the unregulated cannabis market.

In Berkeley, California, one study found that, out of 44 products tested for pesticides, 41 of these products were found to have pesticides.

Not nearly enough states regulate pesticides in their cannabis products.

"There are no failing levels in California [because] there are no regulations," said Reggie Gaudino, vice president of scientific operations and director of intellectual property at Steep Hill.

So when choosing a product in the cannabis market, be aware that this industry is still very unregulated and you may not know what you get.
